Not to be confused with 'The Psychotronic Video Guide' published in 1996 this is a totally separate publication and contains many entries that are unique to this book. For example. The 'Video Guide" starts with the blaxploitation movie Abby while in this book there are a whole load of Abbott and Costello Meet.... reviews to be explored before that. While the later 'Video Guide' has more recent films reviewed  -  relative to 1996 that is - I think it suffers from leaving out a lot of...

Of course George Lucas didn't write the novelization, it was ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster. This is a unique work: both pioneering and astonishingly comprehensive. In television, the term special effects does embrace a far wider range of activities than in the film world. This book covers it all - from the popping champagne cork to bullet and bomb effects, collapsing floors, animated captions, and such "normal" happenings as ringing telephones, boiling kettles, smoky atmosphere and dripping gutters. The continuous shooting of television demands specially designed effects,...

It was a laugh of menace, of bottomless evil, and it echoes across the shadowy corridors of the years like a childhood phantom. My earliest meeting with The Shadow was via a radio loudspeaker—quite a different medium from the originating pulps, but equally colorful. The litany is of course now legendary: "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows. . . ." The maxim that the weed of crime bears bitter fruit, intoned at the start of every program, was biblical in...

"B" movies began to proliferate in the mid-thirties when distributors felt that "double features" might be just the ticket to lure increasingly frugal Depression audiences back into theaters. It began in the '50s with a space ranger named CAPTAIN VIDEO... and a superhero who moved faster than a speeding bullet. In '59 we entered a sixth dimension beyond that known to man. By the '60s we were forced into THE OUTER LIMITS... when THE ADDAMS FAMILY moved into the neighborhood. Our camp heroes BATMAN & Robin slugged it out on Earth... while the Enterprise explored new worlds on its STAR TREK. FRANKENSTEIN was exhumed for made-for-TV movies in the '70s... But never fear, the BIONIC...

Don't be put off by the dryness of the title, this is a fascinating account of a period when the Catholic Church controlled the majority of movie content that Hollywood produced, deciding what cinemagoers could and couldn't see based on what they decided was "good" and "bad". Meticulously researched and very readable it documents how the iron-fist of the Catholic Legion Of Decency slowly starts to crumble as a growing number of directors, producers and cinema owners stand up...

This is a collection of almost 250 (often badly) photocopied clippings and articles from a variety of sources compiled by 'Six Of One' The Prisoner Appreciation Society. Covering the period 1970-80 anything remotely connected to the TV Series THE PRISONER, the actor Patrick McGoohan, the Portmeirion location or fan support of the series has been put together under one privately printed\copied amateur publication called WORLD GALLERY. Produced by and for members of 'Six Of One' in the early...

From the 1920s through to the 1970s, America's most fearless entrepreneurs created thousands of "adults only" features - exploitation films that promised "sinsational!" treatments of the day's hottest topics. These films played in red-light district cinemas or "grindhouses" for almost half a century, until hardcore pornography and the advent of video rang the death knell for this form of "art". This book traces the uncensored history of these films, from...

In 1915 the great film director D. W. Griffith was uncertain about how to use the young actor his studio had just plucked from a successful career in light comedy on Broadway. He was not an outstanding actor, but during the next fifteen years Douglas Fairbanks, with his extraordinary athletic prowess, charm, gaiety and good humour, would become one of the first and best-loved celebrities of the silent era.     His heroic and mock-heroic roles (from Robin Hood to Zorro to the Thief of...

Where was Earth? This was not their galaxy. A strange sun lit the sky with orange rays. In their long cold sleep, the seven space travelers had left their own universe behind, and now their monitor told them that on the planet revolving below them, someone was signalling for help. By space law. they must descend, explore and render assistance. But they would carry weapons. For who could tell what being called to them - or why. All they knew was that it was Alien. Based on an early screenplay...

With all the catalogs Johnson Smith sent out you'd think there would be more copies archived. The cheapness of the paper though (just a few gsm above tissue paper it seems!) is probably a clue to why they seem not to last very long. I have to admit that the cover has been heavily restored\repaired and I've tried to draw a balance between removing heavy yellowing and keeping as much of the original coloring as possible and keeping it readable. SB.

Science fiction is, at best, a very subjective label. It is easy enough to call a film like Fantastic Voyage or Marooned science fiction, but what of Fran/censte/n?Certainly it is based in scientific speculation; yet most people would call it a horror film. We have included it in this book, along with such films as The Time Machine and Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, even though many aficionados would consider these not science fiction, but fantasy. That the several genres overlap there...

'Shooting My Way Out ot Trouble' is the definitive treatment of this cult American film-maker - including all films produced, written and directed by Roger Corman. As it was Corman who gave a number of key American directors their first feature assignments, the book also includes filmographies of key Corman 'alumni' such as Francis Ford Coppola, Joe Dante, Jonathan Demme and Martin Scorsese. All of Corman s movies are covered in detail, including such low-budget classics as Machine Gun Kelly,...

'The suspense is killing me - and I like it!' The excellent stills and text in this book combine to show the ingredients of the classic movies of suspense and mystery. A shadow crosses a hallway... a man hangs by his fingertips from a ledge high above the busy city streets and the guttering begins to crumble... a closed door conceals someone unexpected ... the audience moves to the edge of their seats ... gripped, or gripping each other. This book is about the great cliff-hangers such as The...

The British cinema is undergoing the most radical transformation since the coming of sound. The post-war pattern of falling admissions and shuttered cinemas is being countered by a proliferation of indigenous British films and film makers and by the new interplay of television and video in film finance. This book documents the emergence of this new breed of film makers and the new commercial structures that underpin them. Using personal interviews, astute analysis of their films and a close...
